South Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts, Sledding and Ski Rentals

Ski Resorts
The three Ski Resorts each have very different terrain, feel and costs.

Heavenly
 – Biggest Mountain, Best Views
South Lake Tahoe’s largest ski resort with 29 chairlifts and 97 runs. The base elevations are around 6,500′ and the summit is at 10,067′. The Heavenly Gondola has the best views in Tahoe. Child lift tickets are around $50 and adult lift tickets are $80-90. There are three access points to the mountain: California LodgeStateline Gondola, and Nevada Side

Sierra at Tahoe – Best Deal for Families
Distance: 25 minutes from Elk View
Sierra has 46 trails and 9 chairlifts. It is a smaller mountain with a more family friendly fee. That said, it also has a number of terrain parks and even a quasi-backcountry section you have to hike a little to. It is the closest South Lake resort the Bay Area and Sacramento. You drive right by it on Highway 50 if coming from the west making it a great resort to hit on the first day of your trip. Adult lift tickets are $77 and children tickets are only $19 making it the best deal of any resort for families.

Kirkwood – Steepest Terrain, Fewest Crowds, Best Snow
Distance: 60 minutes from Elk View
Highest base in Lake Tahoe and the most annual snowfall. However, it’s a 45 minute drive from South Lake if the roads are clear and well over an hour if it is snowing. There is only one high speed chair lift. But crowds are mellow and you feel like you are in the High Sierra… which you almost are. For advanced skiers, they have incredible steep terrain and backcountry access. Kirkwood has an “out there” Alpine feel that no other Tahoe ski resort has.

Cross Country Skiing

Kirkwood 80 km of trails. $22 a day. Like the main Kirkwood ski resort, you see taller bigger peaks and overall get a more Alpine feel than the rest of Tahoe.
Distance:
 60 minutes  from Elk View

Spooner Lake
80 km of trails. $22 a day. Lake views from the more advanced trails.
Distance:
 40 minutes  from Elk View

Ski Rental
Tahoe Sports Ltd 4000 Lake Tahoe Blvd # 7, (530) 542-4000
Powderhouse, 3 locations, (530) 542-6222

Sledding
Best: Adventure Mountain Large groomed sledding hill. It generally has the best snow conditions because it is at 7,400′ (1,200′ higher than most Tahoe sledding areas). Parking costs $18. Bring your own sled or rent for $10-20.
Distance:
 20 minutes  from Elk View

Closest: The backyard! As long as there’s enough snow, the Tahoe Conservancy has graciously protected the two lots next to Elk View and they make for great sledding!

All the ski resorts also offer sledding. Ski resort sledding is generally more crowded, more expensive, and has tougher parking.
